A Walk on the Wilder Side
Monadnock Falconry offers you the opportunity to take a walk with a Harris’ Hawk and a Master Falconer. In a 60- or 90-minute session, you will spend time in the field with a hunting raptor and watch him fly in to your own fist! Get answers to the questions you’ve always wanted to ask: What makes a bird of prey tick? What ticks him off? What use can he have for a human being trudging along underneath him? Learn about this fascinating family of predators and about the falconers who have worked closely with them through the ages.
Falconry 101 - Hawks in Flight
In this 60-minute private lesson, you’ll learn what raptors are all about. How powerful are their eyes? What makes them such good hunters? Why do they come back to the glove? Hands-on instruction in some basic falconry principles, including the opportunity to “catch” a flying bird, is included.
1-4 people: $250
5-8 people: $300
9-12 people: $350
These are total costs, not per person.
Falconry 202 - The Hunting Hawk
In this 90-minute private lesson, we’ll go on a ramble through the grounds of The Grouse Woods, giving the hawk time to get into full hunting mode. Along with everything included in Falconry 101, you’ll learn the mechanics of hunting behavior and help beat the brush for possible prey. The transformation of a fluffy, mild-mannered bird into a streak of greased lightning is not to be missed!
1-4 people: $350
5-8 people: $400
9-12 people: $450
These are total costs, not per person.
A Kettle of Hawks - Group Session
Interested in joining up with another group? Starting in March, 2026, participants can save money and meet other bird-enthusiasts by reserving one or more slots in a Group Session. This 90-minute experience includes an introduction to all our species of birds of prey, plus a walk through The Grouse Woods with a pair of hunting Harris’ Hawks. Groups are capped at 12 participants, ensuring that all will have opportunities to handle a bird of prey themselves. We are committed to making this experience accessible and economical for all.
$50 per person (Sundays starting March 1, 2026)
Homeschool Groups and Birthday Parties
Some of the most avid fans of birds of prey are kids! In our sessions for young birders age 4 and up, we give an introduction to hawks, falcons, and owls, their natural history, their relationship with a human handler, and hopefully a little glimpse of their inner life, too. We'll go on a short walk (approximately 1/2 mile, 30-40 minutes) with one of the birds flying free, calling him down to the gauntlet of different students as we go. We always try to tailor our presentation to the ages and interests of those in attendance.
Planning a field trip for a homeschool group or a birthday party?
- We're happy to host groups of up to 30 students.
- The ideal size is 15 students or less; this allows all kids to have at least one chance to hold a hawk.
- The cost for groups with fewer than 10 students is $300 in total.
- For more than 10 students, the cost is $30/student.
- For groups of any size, parents (and very young ones, ages 3 and under) are welcome to attend free of charge.
